Good Evening Everyone,
It’s Thursday again. At least the rainy day/evening combo seems to have slid off from fridays to thursdays. We may actually have a sunny saturday. Although a cool one.
We had a busy week at the farm; we got quite a few beds ready for planting. Still have not planted anything in them though. Next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be very intense, hopefully there are enough hours to put everything in. Probably not! But we will try. I usually don’t plant summer squash and nightshades such as tomatoes, peppers and eggplants till june 8. When we lived in Toronto, Jens’s Italian barber always said that June 8 was the right day for tomatoes. I have always followed that advice. This year has been so weird that a really late frost would not be surprising.
On another front, the orchard is flowering profusely, this means there will be crazy amounts of apples, but really small ones. If we had time, we would thin the fruit to a reasonable number per tree and get a harvest of larger apples.
Last year fruit trees had fungal infections due to excess humidity which led them to lose their leaves earlier than usual. This year so far has not been any better, we are hoping to have better control of fungal diseases by keeping on top of spraying with a mixture of seaweed extract, molasses and fish emulsion. In theory organic sprays create an environment of healthy bacteria which makes it much harder for harmful bacteria to survive. Problem is if it is rainy, anything organic washes off very easily.
I would like to remind the local recipients of this newsletter that we are still accepting CSA members, so of you are interested, you can find the application on our website: marvellousediblesfarm.ca
So… for Saturday, we will have a very generous supply of asparagus which has been growing and bearing at full speed. I can personally refute the claim that asparagus patches last about 20 years. Our oldest patch of Jersey Giants (much in demand by some of the best chefs in the city) is still going strong after 21 years. This may actually be its best year.
Let’s see what is coming to the markets on saturday; the pies are apple, strawberry rhubarb and blueberry.
There is quiche and hummus and empanadas. Unfortunately we are out of wild leek pesto till next year.
There are lots of greens including giant Romaine lettuce, kohlrabi, fennel, bunches of chard, rhubarb mustard, nettle, cilantro, garlic chives, lovage, wild mint.
Strawberries are still green, Next week looks much warmer. Maybe they will finally start ripening!
And in case you were wondering, we will bring some tomato, pepper and eggplant seedlings for the next few markets.
I certainly have enough of them!:))
It’s late again, I shall bid a good night with the hope for a glorious saturday and for a chance to see everyone at one of the markets!
